History :

Contra Costa for Every Generation began in early 2004 as a countywide partnership to make Contra Costa communities aging-friendly. It brought together diverse stakeholders from the public, private and non-profit sectors to identify strategies and develop a strategic plan.

The John Muir / Mt. Diablo Community Health Fund and Y & H Soda Foundation through their Healthy Aging Initiative and Funding Partnership, as well as the Contra Costa Employment & Human Services Department, The California Endowment and The California Wellness Foundation joined forces to support this unique effort that can serve as a model for other communities.

CCEG’s role is to help to create aging-friendly communities in Contra Costa County by increasing awareness, getting people involved through active engagement, supporting them with active training and facilitation, creating strategic alliances and fostering local action to make communities more aging-friendly.

From 2004 to 2006, CCEG was led first by an Organizing Committee which would later be replaced by a Steering Committee with a Chair and Vice Chair. A countywide survey commissioned by CCEG determined that there were six areas of concern – Health and Wellness, Housing, Involvement in the Community, Neighborhood Quality of Life, Support Services and Transportation. Under the coordination of the Steering Committee six Work Groups were formed and action-based initiatives in each area along with a strategic plan to deal with them were determined. The six areas became known as the “Six Initiatives”.

CCEG, in November 2006, decided that it could best remain financially viable and achieve its mission going forward by becoming a 501c3 non-profit public benefit corporation. A core group of volunteers from the Steering Committee and the community worked to achieve this.

In January 2007, a board of directors was appointed. On February13, 2007, CCEG was incorporated by the State of California. In August 2007, CCEG received its Internal Revenue Service exemption retroactive to the incorporation date.
